Tightwaddishness versus the Trusting Leap

Someone had emailed me about our year-long Opening the Moneyflow program  (which starts tomorrow) and had explained his situation. The business was making very little money, from the little he described there were big foundational pieces missing, and I thought the business model wasn’t one that could be successful as-is.

I told him to would be crazy for him to take a course like Opening the Moneyflow, and instead steered him to our less-expensive shorter courses and advised him to put a foundation in place.

The email back told me how relieved he felt, that he thought he “should” do a big course, make a big commitment, but my response felt really true to him, and he relaxed.

Over the years I’ve seen people hyped into taking big, expensive programs that supposedly proved how committed they are to their business, and I’ve always wondered.

Because the truth is, sometimes the big commitment leap is what is called for. And sometimes it’s a disastrous thing. How can you tell if you need to make a leap or not?

Let’s Talk About Money, Shall We?

First, it must be said: it is really, really challenging to have a healthy relationship with money in westernized culture. Money is everywhere, and yet extremely unconscious. Lip service is given, in media and elsewhere, to how important other things in life are, and yet money is, subtly and powerfully, re-enforced as the most top banana in our food chain.

On top of that, we seem to be addicted to making breakthroughs. With all of the push for more, better, faster, innovate, new, now, now, now, it can be hard to really put on the brakes.

Couple that with real-life struggles to have enough money to just survive and be comfortable, never mind the glamorous life most of us don’t really want anyway, and suddenly it’s awfully hard to tell which way your heart is pointing.

It’s a big mess, and no joke. And somehow, through all of this, you have to discern the truth in your heart.

Don’t Ask About “Doing”

When you are trying check into your heart, what you are really doing is looking *through* your heart into the realm of Oneness. Your heart is a doorway to Divine presence, and your main point of access to what lies beyond your ego and emotional responses.

Action, doing, happens in the realms of the physical and energetic. Things that have form take actions. Oneness is.

Rather than ask your heart what you should do, “Should I do this course or not? Should I spend money or not?” ask about the relationship.

“What is my heart’s relationship to my business? What is my heart’s relationship to money? What is my heart’s relationship to this course?”

Take some time with this. I recommend asking what I call a “sincere” question, meaning that you don’t really know the answer. So often we ask questions that are really statements in disguise, because we think we know what the answer should be.

Instead, allow yourself to admit your ignorance, that you really don’t know. Allow yourself to be willing to be surprised.

p.s. Let’s Talk About Money- No-Cost Learning Series

Over the past eleven years hundreds and hundreds of heart-centered business people have taken the Heart of Money Transformational Journey. It’s not a manifestation course. It’s not a spiritual get-rich-quick course.

It is a proven approach to creating a truly health, Divinely-inspired relationship with money. It’s based in teachings that go back at least 1400 years, and is perhaps both our most spiritual and most foundational course.

“I’ve always had issues around my finances and it got to the point where I avoided dealing with my finances as much as possible…I had a number of big epiphanies during the class which led to huge shifts – financially, emotionally, and spiritually. I emerged from this experience with an entirely different relationship with money and I no longer find it painful or difficult to deal with. This class was by far, one of the best investments I’ve ever made in my business and in my life. It was deep, powerful, and transformative.” – Cathy Wilke

Starting next week we’re offering a no-cost learning series on this topic, including a live class, and I encourage you to join us for that.

  1. Great piece, especially the discussion about our addiction to breakthroughs. That addiction is what so much high hype marketing appeals to…it can make people big money but is it sustainable, and does it really help? As I look back I realize it was that promise/hope of a big breakthrough that led me to spend a lot of money on programs that didn’t do much to help me move forward. Business and intimate relationship have taught me that the steady daily practice, simple actions taken consistently over time, are what yield the most results. That takes the pressure off too of finding the one “perfect” method or system or brand that will catapult me forward. In fact I have discovered that I’d really rather not be catapulted anywhere! Once again, it’s back to chop wood and carry water…oh, how un-American!

  2. I enjoyed reading your words. It feels encouraging to read straight talk about money, the way to health in this area can be such a long one and is for me. Kind of a connecting point of all different kinds of emotional challenges. So, onward, in discerning the truth in my heart. Because there is always a way back to that.

  3. Mark this is so beautifully expressed. Thank you.
‘When you are trying check into your heart, what you are really doing is looking *through* your heart into the realm of Oneness. Your heart is a doorway to Divine presence, and your main point of access to what lies beyond your ego and emotional responses.’
Your words always take me home to what’s true. Truly, thank you.

  4. Gosh. I burst into tears when I read ‘Ask what is your heart’s relationship to business’. I nearly spent $15,000 on a 6 month marketing programme with someone whom I respect. It was only a phone call with a colleague that made me realise that I am not ready for this kind of big spend, and therefore big push, in my business yet. My husband and business partner died just over a year ago, and actually when I ask this question, the words that come to mind from my heart are ‘treat me gently, I’m very tender still, go very slowly and quietly’. So I am doing that, and doing my best to not listen to my mind that says ‘I ought to be earning more right now’.
Thanks so much Mark, I really appreciate your honesty and wisdom.

    1. Jane- tears is where we’re at. 🙂 I’m so glad you saved yourself with consciousness! Timing is so important, and grieving is so important, and our journeys are too important and too tender to rush.
