Advice Versus Internal Guidance

Before we get to Yollana’s video on guidance and leadership, I need to tell you about my crying jag on Friday.

I was listening to the radio when I heard about the death of Leonard Nimoy, who had played Spock on the original Star Trek TV series. When there is so much tragedy and pain in the world, why was I crying over this death?

It took me a few moments to realize that he, and Star Trek, represented childhood wonder to me. I remember laying on my back in the grass staring up at the sky, I have no idea how old I was, certainly young, just making the biggest wish to go travel the stars.

This past weekend my wife Holly and I attended the Economics of Happiness conference put on by Local Futures, and heard a theme repeat over and over: that the indigenous wisdom of being connected to place, earth, dreams and beauty matters deeply for our survival and in our thriving.

Helena Norberg-Hodge, the founder and director of Local Futures, as well the producer and co-director of the documentary The Economics of Happiness, stated clearly that we must be able to do two vital things: to grieve deeply for the destruction and to dream daringly for the hope of the future.

I hope we all can make that commitment – to grieve when our grief finds us, and to not be ashamed to let the wisdom of our childhood dreams shine forth.

Two Mentions before the Video

First: Nonviolent Communication

lashelle3-smMy friend and teacher LaShelle Lowe-Charde, with whom Holly and I studied Nonviolent Communication for a year and half, is holding a course through video conferencing, so that means you don’t have to be in Portland to learn from her!

It’s titled, “Getting Through Reactivity to Needs & Requests.” She writes, “You value conscious compassionate relationships yet find yourself getting caught in your own reactive patterns and those of others. You would like to unhook yourself and stand up for what you value and need.”

She’s someone I deeply respect as living and speaking Nonviolent Communication fluently, beyond mere technique. Her modeling and transmission have been incredibly helpful and affecting for me.

If you need to learn NVC, if you need to get beyond your reactivity so you can truly ask for and receive what you need, then I highly recommend this course. Any questions, please follow the link below and ask LaShelle directly.

Second: TeachNow! Free video call.

Secondly, another friend of mine, best-selling author and my mastermind buddy Jennifer Louden, is offering TeachNow, which she has previously taught to nearly 1,200 students over the years.

Something deeply true is that for many who are self-employed, teaching or leading groups is going to be a huge part of your business being profitable and fun. At the same time, stepping into teaching can be intimidating, or bettering your teaching when you’ve been in a rut… hard.

To help give you a taste of the course Jen and I are holding a free call on March 10, 1pm pacific.

Questions? Follow the link above and ask Jen! She’s amazing. 🙂

Okay, let’s get to Yollana’s video.

Strategy, Guidance and Leadership, from the heart

This week Yollana delves into the question… how do you maintain your own knowing and still take in advice, help and learning from other people? Too little help from others and you’re floundering. Take in the wrong help, and suddenly you’re no longer following your heart.

Take a look, just a bit over 3 minutes.

  1. Every strategy has to sit well with your heart before you can effectively act on it — that notion feels so true to me. In my first years with internet business I wasn’t able to effectively act on the many strategies I met with. Now, several years later, I feel able to do so. Why couldn’t I before? Because, I think, I had to truly meet again and again what it is I am all about (on a soul level perhaps) in the context of business. I couldn’t activate the strategies because for me, I had to have a real sense of the “ground” with which I was working. Other people can act more quickly, I think, able to make peace with small pie slices of their heart-and-business terrain. In any case, for me indeed, I can’t move forward on just about anything with conviction (much less biz!) without my heart agreeing and oh-so-simply knowing: “YES.”

  2. This is a beautiful reminder for me Yollana, thank you. I have definitely had times when I followed an expert’s advice exactly, even if it didn’t reasonate 100% with me, and it wasn’t until I followed my heart and made a few shifts in the way I was moving forward with the advice, ways that felt more comfortable to me, that I actually saw the results. Checking in with my heart, before moving forward, is now something that I tend to do so that I am in alignment: heart and action.

  3. Yollana, that’s freeing and challenging at the same time. Some of us (me) have a little trouble hearing what’s in my heart. Good thing I get plenty of opportunities to practice!

    I appreciate you!

  4. I love that. ‘grieve deeply’. So true. My heart goes out to you, Mark, and
your family for losing your beloved one. So much to say, so little to say.
    Blessings,

  5. Hard to believe that a year ago, I only knew about Heart of Business as a blog…it’s made such a huge difference in my life since then! Thank you Yollana for this simple and profound presentation of what I am coming to understand is one of the great secrets of building a successful heart-based business. <3
