Reaching for Light

Many blessings to everyone in this season! Nearly everyone is reaching for more Light in this time of year, through such holidays as Hanukkah, Christmas, Ramadan, Yule, Solstice, Kwanzaa, or any other winter celebration.

For some of us in business, especially in retail, this is a tremendously lucrative time of year as well, while for others, perhaps in the “personal services” area, it seems like this is dead time until mid-January.

I want to give three suggestions – all practical.

  • The first is not to make any pictures about this time of year– whether or not you are busy is dependent on whether you are truly serving people, not what kind of business you are in.
  • The second suggestion is that if you are feeling the urge to “do” a lot right now- frantically chasing after your customers, and not getting anywhere fast- STOP! If you can stop for a few minutes, you can feel the emotion underneath the doing-ness. It might be, for instance my own personal favorite, fear.

Allow yourself to feel this emotion- write about it, pray about it, go receive your favorite sort of healing session with a focus on allowing and opening this piece. (Here is a pitch for my wife, Holly, who gives an excellent massage/spiritual/emotional healing combo- whew- I now have all sorts of emotional and physical space in my body again, and I am grateful! Get an appointment before I book them all myself. 510-595-4669, or you can reply through me.)

This emotion MUST have space to release, or you won’t get ANYTHING done- at least nothing worthwhile. I’ve been trying to get an email out for a week, and it wasn’t until I let myself feel my own terror yesterday during the massage that I reconnected with the stream of how I need to be giving in my business.

  • The third suggestion is to spend a few minutes in your heart feeling what would really nourish you in the next few weeks– this will be different for different people. You may be looking forward to rest, you may be excited and anticipating the parties and buzz, you may want intimacy with loved ones, or some combination of things. Wherever you are, is from where you give. See how your gifts in business can meet your own needs, and then offer these gifts in your marketing. Do NOT try to give what you “think” people want, especially if it goes against what you are wanting.
