I’ve noticed that when one runs into a problem in business, a place of stuckness, something you can’t figure out how to solve or get past, an incredible amount of time and energy can be spent in struggle.
I’ve done it. I bet that you’ve done it.
I’ve found the simple, best and most efficient way to handle these is with the full stop. Instead of talking and thinking to strategize your way out, just stop.
Not with the purpose of trying to overcome the stuckness or make it go away. But to just face it, calmly, with an open heart, to see what’s really there.
One of the most important capacities you can develop as a human is the ability to face discomfort without needing to fix it immediately. The immediate fix attempt is a reaction born simply of trying to make the pain go away.
Facing the discomfort, and letting your heart find soothing as you face it, means that you then have access to wisdom, to spaciousness, to simplicity. And your chances of success go way, way up.
Most often the stuckness is caused by one of three things:
1) Overcomplicating something that is really fairly simple. For instance, thinking you have to figure out every step for the next six months, instead of just asking what your next step is, and then taking a look in your heart to discern that next step.
2) Conflating two or more problems into one. I saw this when clients were trying to figure out how to connect with brand new people and enroll them at the same time. Two different problems, rarely done at the same time, and so don’t try to do it.
3) Trying to over control something instead of just feeling the fear and finding soothing. Starting a more ambitious networking plan to connect with new people can be scary, so face the fear, instead of making it complicated.
When I recognize one of these places, I hope I have the grace to remember to just stop. Stop and go into the Remembrance, or prayer, or meditation.
When I can just make space for what is, no push, no pull, just saying “Yes,” I can see what’s really there. And I can face it with compassion and ask to be shown the path forward.
What problems or stucknesses are you currently facing that you are either overcomplicating, conflating two problems or more, or trying to control something instead of facing the emotional discomfort? What happens if you take the next 15 minutes just to face them with an open heart?
What do you notice when you look at your business problems in this way?
