[Video] 3 Tips For Social Media Without Throwing Up

Before our video I want to mention that I’m doing a free call for The Shift Network in which Stephen Dinan interviews me and we talk about what it really takes to get a transformational business going.

I happens Saturday, August 22 (the day before my birthday!) and it’s titled Beyond Startup Overwhelm: How to Artfully Navigate the Demands of Your New Transformational Business.

We’re going to cover some really critical, foundational pieces, and it is also an intro to a new course I’ll be teaching through the Shift Network that starts in September.

You can register for the free call here: August 22 free call with Mark and Stephen

(It is an affiliate link. If you end up registering for the full course through The Shift Network, I’ll end up getting paid a portion of the fee, which only seems right, since I’m teaching the course. 🙂 ).

Now, on to what Jason recommends to save your tender digestion from social media.

3 Tips for Doing Social Media Without Throwing Up

Social can be a hot mess of inspirational overwhelm and insipid versions of intimacy. However, it can also be genuinely connecting, beautiful and incredibly helpful for your business.

Instead of succumbing to the nausea, spend less than 5 minutes with our practitioner Jason Stein and Paul Zelizer, who is the founder of Wisdompreneurs (for which I, Mark, am on the advisory board) and the former social media director for the Wisdom 2.0 conference.

Next Steps: Need Community?

Sometimes you’re not ready for a training program, but you still need support. If so, you may want to check out our Community, which is priced at Pay From Your Heart pricing, and includes both spiritual and business resources and support.

“The Heart of Business community, and the support and guidance I’ve received there, has encouraged me to get creative about new ways to bring people who might need my help toward my business. The coaching calls are an amazing opportunity to dive in and have any business question on any topic you are struggling with addressed. But the very best part is the focus on spiritual support that allows you to rest in your heart.” – Monica Fauble, www.acupuncturewithmonica.com

  1. Dear Jason, I’m afraid I didn’t find your colleague’s 3 tips at all helpful. One of them I didn’t understand and the other two didn’t seem to fill the brief of “doing social media without throwing up!”
What does he mean when he says we need to look at “the deeper business story of what you do”? I’m an alternative therapist and I love my work and I get excellent feedback from the people I work with (although there aren’t that many of them!) That’s it. I don’t understand this thing about branding. How do I turn myself into a brand? In any case, I’m not sure I WANT to be a “brand!” Why can’t I just remain me?
The other two points he makes about finding out what the leaders in my field are doing and asking questions when using social media to generate responses and interest make me feel particularly ill. My biggest problem with social media is the amount of time it takes up and how utterly tedious it is.. And both of these ideas are guaranteed to have me glued to my laptop trawling through websites and answering questions and getting even more bored and exhausted.
Sorry…..I love Heart of Business and have been reading Mark’s posts for a long time, but this video was just too glib. Sally .
    .

    1. Hi Sally,

No apologies needed. Love that you took the time to comment. What I appreciate most is the ezine like social media creates a dialogue of human to human interaction.

You name a few things that can be illuminated.

First, you are a brand. You are you with a unique flavor in the healing world with values, tastes, preferences, and quirks. Your business is an extension of you and being more you publicly will allow you to be seen, witnessed, and remembered.

One challenge most wisdomprenuers face is how to tell their story in an authentic and powerful way. For me personally I was an acupuncturist in a hospital and 95% of my patients were sick from work so I started studying ways to do business in a way that helped people make and impact and livelihood.

The real truth is social media is no different than any other platform of marketing. It’s really all about building relationships. Paul’s three tips are really about expressing yourself, listening to others, and engaging, which can be done in in your clinic, inpublic talks, in your ezine, and on social media.

And I hear you on social media being a time waster. I think there are specific strategies that help to minimize the time output and maximize the new relationships. Perhaps I’ll talk more about that in the next video.

Again, thank you for speaking up.

  2. Dear Jason,

I found this brief and a good reminder of 3 principles to be applied. The harder part is translating these into actions and habits that don’t draw me into spending too much time on social media. So, I guess implied is that I need to spend less time browsing my feeds. AND, setting some limits to how much time I spend there.

I can relate to Sally’s distaste at times to social media, and I also think it is a choice to engage there or not and your video reminds me that it is more importantly about HOW we engage there.

    Thanks, I appreciate this!

    David

    1. Hi David,

I’ve found like a marketing plan that having dedicated time to read, listen and engage to posts and threads allows for more sanity.

If you place it into a SMART goal it may help with being more consistent and allowing you the freedom to not be chained to the feed.

  3. Hi Jason,

This subject is a timely issue for me. I listened to Mark’s Community business focus call on the theme of social media the other day, and in my reflection, I saw how social media is really a portal, a gateway, into the lives of others…millions of them…and so where I am now is, how do I narrrow that down, reach the people who are going to be interested in who I am and what I do, and do that in an efficient way that doesn’t suck lots of time away from me for little return.

Paul’s comments would be useful, I think, if I had already that figured out! They are all about what to do once you are already engaging with people. But I’m at an earlier stage of trying to figure out how to engage in the first place, in a way that feels both productive and sustainable. Hoping that makes sense – I would love to hear your thoughts.

  4. Jason,
I appreciate this video and the advice. You helped me get started with my website and newsletter, and at the time I wanted to throw up. After three years of twice-a-month newsletters, I don’t feel queasy any more, and I appreciate these tips to improve in a more unified direction.
    Tanuja

  5. Hi Lia,

Love that the feedback is coming in.

I agree how do you create your story or brand is extremely helpful.

When I go to your site I see that your business is built on three core values: spirituality, love, and truth!

So in social media it’s engaging with these conversations. Allowing yourself to not only push out information, but learn from the audience.

For example, Mark is explaining social media through a Sufi lens.

How would you explain social media through the lens of hypnotherapy? What is a teaching there than can be shared on social media?

Once you have your brand you can beat that drum again and again in a million different ways that will be heard and shared.

  6. Tanuja – It’s great to see that your ezine has been consistent. In a world filled with evolving healers those than learn how to market and share have a bigger opportunity to make a difference and a profit.

  7. Hey Jason and everyone!

First, it was wonderful to connect with you in this way Jason. Always enjoy exploring concrete ways to grow a heart/wisdom based business with you.

Second, It’s REALLY hard to give a more clear sense of what developing a compelling brand story means in under a minute. Like impossible kind of hard. 🙂

Fortunately, I have an extensive blog post on the process I use with clients to do this. It’s called Zen and The Art of Building a Brand and it’s the most widely read and shared post I’ve ever written. http://www.paulzelizer.com/building-a-brand

Thanks for the great work you do at HOB!

  8. “The sacred story of your business.” So many people don’t take the time to do this! I was one of those people, when I was an accidental entrepreneur. But now, I recognize the need and value of the stories that make us (and our businesses) what they are in the world – they communicate our value and reason for existence better than anything else we could offer. So GLAD to see you here, Paul!

  9. Jason, I really appreciate the time you took with Paul to create this video for us. I understood once again how clear and focused I need to be on ‘who’ I truly am in my work and how to bring that out delicately and transparently without having my ‘ego’ so involved in how i have been seeing social media functioning. I am not quite there yet and am uncomfortable with the thought of it for now….(some personal inner work to still do on this), and when I am ready, I know I will have this wonderful and spiritual support to get me set up and through it. Thank you again!
