Quick note: Today is the deadline to start with either Clients and Money or Expand Your Reach. If you’ve been considering them, and want to get started this coming Monday, jump in! If you have any questions, ask. We’re here.
On with the show!
I’ve had this conversation with many clients, and it’s one I want to share with you. On the face of it, it may sound like I’m asking you to be cold-hearted, but I’m not.
In some ways, this is a continuation of what I wrote about recently. And, it’s a different point I want to make here.
What I am asking you to do is to allow practical, ego-level communication to be integrated into an expression of deep soul-essence. I want you to have it, so that your business can thrive, and you don’t have to struggle for so long.
Here’s the highlights of that conversation.
The client typically starts out saying something along the lines of: “I have a deep feeling the essence that wants to come through me. It’s profound, it’s moving, it’s humbling, it’s beautiful. I have no idea who to focus on, who my audience is when I have so many people I can help.”
This is absolutely beautiful and needs to be celebrated. When you feel that essence coming through, it is annihilating (in a good way.) You experience surrender, humility, and the expansion of the heart, as well as your true jewels and gifts coming through. It’s amazing.
However, the feeling of not wanting to focus in on an audience, although I completely get it!, is less helpful.
So, let me tell you what the commitment to an audience is NOT.
The commitment to a particular audience/niche:
- Is not a marriage that will last a life time. You can change it up.
- Is not a soul-essence choice. It’s merely a choice of people you enjoy, that you want to serve and help.
- Will not include everyone who has ever come to you, or everyone you will ever want to serve. It’s just a portion. It’s not a big dragnet that scoops up everything.
The commitment to a particular audience/focus serves the purpose of allowing it to be easier for you to learn about business, to gain experience working with clients, make it easier to market, and to feel what it’s like to gain some traction.
The commitment could just be for 6 months, or a year, or 18 months, while you practice reaching out. While you practice learning language that really lands with people, so they can come toward you.
You can change your audience/focus later. You can shift it, expand it, or change course completely! You are not locked into a closet with it, and you are not doomed to boredom of only one kind of client.
What a short to medium-term commitment to a niche/audience WILL do for you is make getting your business going, and getting clients and money flowing in MUCH easier.
We have, over the years, convinced many, many people to pick a focus. It is usually a process of surrender and letting go for them to pick it.
It’s only afterwards that they see how much freedom comes with that choice, and how light the choice really could be. It doesn’t have to be agonizing.
So… can I urge you to pick a focus, an audience, something that defines who you work with, just for about a year, so you can get on with learning how to make your business work in a beautiful way?
How does this land with you? Questions? Experiences?
With love,
Mark Silver
