Two specific ways businesses struggle

Two specific ways businesses struggle, and why, and what’s needed

I’ve been as guilty as anyone, at times, of that pressured, scurrying response to fear and anxiety, trying to answer the question, “What do I need so that this pain/challenge/trouble goes away?”

Even when you know better, it’s so tempting to try and fix something to simply get away from the discomfort. (Did I say “discomfort”? Sometimes it’s worse than that, amiright?)

So many times I see people leap into the latest “hot offering” that seems to sweep through in waves. Whether it’s Blogging, or Membership Sites, or Online Courses, or Premium Events, there’s always some strategy around the corner that someone is marketing in a clever and compelling way. Droves of people dive in…

Does it work? Sometimes. For some people. But not universally. So many people are left in the dust, with yet another strategy that isn’t implemented. Or, if implemented, it didn’t “look like it did in the cookbook.”

Some people go through this cycle a single time, or maybe twice, and then give up.

Others get caught in the “endless education” cycle, learning, learning, learning, but never actually developing their business. The marketing involved often supports this cycle, because it feeds into the feeling that you aren’t whole, you aren’t okay if you don’t have this “one, last, special, platinum, amazing piece.”

Two painful cycles = Two solutions

Both are painful cycles to be in. The solution is twofold.

Solution One:
You have to develop a healthy relationship with business itself.

Business can be, has been, so dysfunctional, that it can be a challenge to develop a healthy relationship with “business.” Not just your business, but being in business.

An example: If your parents were divorced, and your grandparents had an abusive relationship and everyone around you had a series of short-term, abusive or dysfunctional relationships, you would probably be pretty lost at how to have a healthy, long-term love relationship with someone.

It’s not that you couldn’t, it’s just that you would probably need to unlearn a lot of what you picked up unconsciously, and heal your relationship with relationships, right?

Solution Two: You have to see the big picture.

Without the big picture, you simply don’t know where you are going. It makes everything seem scarier, bigger or harder than it really has to be. You’re left guessing at what you need, when you need it, and how to put it together. You start to think there’s something wrong with you, when there isn’t.

Another example: If you set out to travel across a country, and want to arrive at a certain destination, it’s really helpful to have seen the big map and to know that although it looks like going directly east is the fastest route, there is actually a big, uncrossable canyon there, and it’s better to start out going south, then north east, before going directly east.

With a map like that, you can also see the terrain and know what kind of equipment you’ll need along the way, and what you can safely leave at home.

Sure, there will be a lot of challenges and unknowns on your journey that the map can’t tell you, but it can get you oriented so that you have a big chance of being successful.

All of this is to say that if you set out on the journey of business without knowing the terrain, and without healing your relationship with business, there’s a good chance that you’ll sabotage yourself unnecessarily, and that you can avoid running into obstacles that don’t have to be part of the journey.

Don’t forget: you aren’t broken

You aren’t broken, your business isn’t broken. All of what I’ve written above can maybe lead you down the path of doubting yourself. But that’s exactly what we don’t want. I want you to trust your heart.

Being in business does require learning. Sometimes, healing is required, too. Despite that, despite everything, you aren’t broken. Some healing and learning is absolutely helpful, and no one course or program is going to be a magic elixir.

So trust. And breathe. And rest into your heart.

I say this because we *are* offering a course that addresses these two problems of relationship and big picture. Of course I want you to join us if you’re inspired to, if it resonates.

But please don’t buy out of panic, or lack, or thinking you’re broken. From us or anyone else.

  1. I struggle with this, the slowing, trusting and breathing, I’m always in the place of thinking more is to be done. Good perspective here.
