Gareth Higgins and the Seventh Story

A couple of weeks ago, I had a conversation with the peace activist and story teller Gareth Higgins who founded the Porch Magazine, and Movies and Meaning festival. He’s quite a guy; he has collaborated with Alice Walker, and is passionate about story telling as a way to create connection and peace in the world.

He’s also an entrepreneur, someone who has held successful, profitable festivals, and regularly runs retreats to his home country of Ireland.

I think you’re going to love this conversation. We laugh a lot. His insights into the six main stories that humanity usually tells, and the transformative seventh story that some of us are beginning to tell are tremendous, as well as immediately practical.

I have to tell you that the day after the interview, I was walking my do as normally I dog, but then I started to look at my life through the seventh story lens. It was a very profound, spiritual experience. Deeply heart-opening, and some powerful insights dropped in.

I’m thinking you’ll really enjoy this interview.

And here’s the pure audio, if you don’t want to watch the video:

  1. Loving your heart and words, Gareth Higgins. Thank you, Mark for this interview. I serve those who have had trauma and relational wounding who are actively shifting their stories of their lives. Yes, horrible things happened. Yet I watch them choosing to live their present moment differently . They ask themselves, “who do I want to be given this?” and that orients them toward a more satisfying life.

  2. Thanks, Mark, for sharing this. I was deeply moved and inspired. I have not brought this into my CFS website work yet, but a big part of my teaching involves this 7th story…a few years ago I shifted my website to call it Women’s Voices Rising for Life on Earth…I did not continue that site but the essence of that story and vision continues to be embedded in my work, and teaching people, literally, a section called Walking Barefoot on the Earth developing a reciprical relationship with the earth, being supported by the earth, in your writing, and being a voice for the earth….is so much part of my vision. I’m brought to the depths of why I do what I do, and encouraged to fully bring that forth, hearing this interview. It also helped me a lot personally, with a particular story I’ve been struggling with in my life…and how to tell it in a way that truly helps…this was a gift on many levels, thank you.

    1. Debora- so glad it resonated- and of course you’re doing this work, too. It’s so critical, right?
