I was talking to someone in our Learning Community, and they were explaining how the work they do with people really requires going inward, and that video can be distracting. She didn’t want to run a group that was always on video.
I said a very simple thing that you might have said yourself, depending on where your stuck places are.
I said: “So have everyone turn their video off, including you.”
It’s both understandable and a little mystifying, isn’t it, how we get caught in needing to use a tool in our business the way that “everyone does.”
Or, worse, to create our offers so they are carbon copies of other people’s, even if those offers don’t match our skills, our gifts, or even just our preferences.
My wife Holly, who does amazing work within our Learning Community, supporting people to hear their own guidance in the context of their business, has never been built, as a healer, to work in short segments. She goes deep, and that takes time.
When she had a healing practice, long before Heart of Business, she really thrived when she realized her sessions could be an hour and a half to two hours long, and that the clients who loved her, loved those longer sessions, did the deeper work, and everyone was happy.
I see this over and over again, that when someone embraces their gifts…
Not always “gifts.” Let me restate that.
It doesn’t even have to be as big as “gifts.” Even if you just embrace your preferences, how you enjoy working, things will go so much better!
Including or not including written replies, ditching video and just doing audio, short sessions, long sessions. Getting even more creative.
My colleague Tad Hargrave at Marketing for Hippies offers what he calls “Puttering Sessions.” He’s upfront that he’ll be cleaning his house while talking to you. Doing dishes, sweeping, scrubbing- I’m guessing not running a vacuum. No video calls, just coaching. He doesn’t charge his highest price, and he sells them out and people are really happy with them.
I’ve been doing Virtual Retreats for over twenty years, five calls over 24 hours, including one in the middle of the night. I also spontaneously lead 20-25 minute Sufi chanting on Zoom sometimes. I’ve also done woodland walk sessions, where I’m on audio with someone, coaching them while I walk through the woods.
You can do whatever you want. In fact, the more you bring your preferences, your creativity, your sense of fun and how you enjoy working, the better.
If you could completely let go of the formats and structures that you’ve taken on from others, and then let your heart and mind play with what would be best… what would that look like?
I’d love to hear what you dream up!
with love,
Mark Silver, M.Div.
