Although many in the Heart of Business Community already know him, you may not, so I want to introduce you to Steve Mattus, who is our Director of Education and Community Manager. He’s also one heck of a great coach for his clients.
Steve has been with us for several years now, first as a client, and now as a critical member of our core team. I talk to him nearly every day since he started with us and have learned, the hard way, that every time I’ve gone against his advice, it’s been a mistake.
This is his debut in our newsletter, and in it he describes why it took so long for him to finally get to his very first yoga class. **shakes head** The answer may be surprising for you.
I loved watching Steve’s video, and hope you will, too. It’s under 4 minutes.
So, about Steve’s question: how can you create more safety for your clients to approach you? Please comment below!

Click here for info and to register.
Foundations2: Expand Your Reach is for those whose income is at times okay, but inconsistent, and you knew if you reached more people, you would have a full, consistent business. It covers website strategy and networking (including networking for introverts!).

Don’t know what you need? Take our Readiness Assessment. We can help you learn where your business is developmentally and what you need to help it grow.

The Spiritual Development Program starts Tuesday
(Still a few spots left.)
Honestly, if you’re in complete start-up, you probably need business development rather than spiritual development.
However, once your business has some movement to it, you may be struggling with how to make clear decisions from the heart, how to access and express love even when overwhelmed or when something triggers you, and how do you come to terms with issues like wanting more and yet still yearning for humility.
Hands down, the single biggest factor in our clients’ success is the spiritual access to their own heart. This access is always there, but it’s not always easy to get to.
If your heart is tugging at you about this, take a look at the program. Only 20 spots, and it’s nearly half-full.

that right
I am finally getting my psychotherapy practice started full time, which entails getting a proper website. Of late I’ve been working with my designer to present a welcoming, warm, “safe” & non-intrusive website ( i.e. what I see as pushy or overwhelming). Your message is a wonderful, timely confirmation for me, … I wasn’t sure why I was being so emphatic about safety, because contacting us on-line or via email are “distanced” from phoning. . . Now I know!
And yeah, we gotta respond quickly, with interest & caring…
I love this, Steve. As a yoga teacher, this really hits home. Doubly as I reach out to studios only to hear crickets. Thank you for sharing and these are incredible questions to really contemplate!
Thanks Wendy. I’d love to hear what comes up for you as you contemplate these questions. 🙂
Thank you, Steve. Thank you, Wendy. You both have shared your heart to the world to help make it a better place. this encourages me to take the next step with the sharing of my experiences with an energy based, self-healing art of compassionate love to the world. I, also, have been stuck in fear from lack of technical, legal, and political knowledge. You both are modeling a way to go globally into the unknown, walking with our hearts in our hands, humbly sharing our life’s experiences to every human being…by connecting through cyber-space. Your contribution will make this world a better place. Thank you.
So sweet to receive, Betsy. Thank you for sharing that. 🙂
Steve, first so great to see you live on camera here! And I loved both your delivery and your message — while I do feel I provide a great degree of accessibility and safety, there’s always room for improvement. Especially when it comes to getting out of my head, where I already know what I offer and how, and into the head of potential clients — always tricky for me but also a very worthwhile endeavor. All the best in your current health efforts.
Thanks Sharon! What you say is so true… “getting out of our own head,” can be tricky business. So easy to forget or unintentionally deceive ourselves. Another great question that came up for me as I thought about this was, “If I think or feel like I’m already providing safety, how do I know I actually am?” Much love to you!
It really gets down to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs once again! Reminding us that our businesses are heart and relationally based. I use my meditation practice to feel into how to energetically show up in my materials and my presence for deep connection. I have also learned that helping people feel safe is a leadership skill, so you vid is timely for me, thank you!
Hey Sarah! Right on… so true. Safety is low on the Hierarchy, isn’t it… so it can be such a barrier to entry in our marketing if it’s missing! Glad it was timely for you!
So beautiful Steve and I so appreciate you making this video for us and sharing so deeply. This weekend I gave my talk that I asked you about on our last coaching call and you specifically told me that above all else I needed to create ‘connection’ and share deeply with the people…and make eye contact. I noticed as I was with these people that they had so much fear. I saw myself in them in how I am sometimes and I felt so much compassion for all of our fears. I didn’t talk at them but spoke to their hearts and we had very lovely moments together sharing. If I am working with people’s wounds, I will make very sure now that I create as much safety as I can from my own heart and move out of my head about putting forth the right technique for them. I think this is what I will need to do. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention.
Awesome, Daniela!
It was great to hear today that a number of people in attendance long to continue the connection with you. Safety is always important, and especially so with the work you do. That kind of connection (which leads to safety) can’t be replaced. Keep up the beautiful work!
Great video, Steve! It’s easy to imagine that as adults we have our own safety covered – but I know from my own experience on both sides of the client/provider fence just how tender it can be to reach out for help. Great to see you on video and sending you lots of love 🙂
Thanks Dorothy! So true… very tender. 🙂
Lots of love back to you!
So timely Steve,
just implementing processes at the Yoga Studio for following up with New Students. Really key reminder to consider whether they felt safe, or how to help them feel safe to come in the first time. I think Im intuitively pretty good at this, Im such a caretaker with newbies! But reminds me to emphasize it as I pass this task on to my admin helper.
Right on! Glad it was timely, Shelley!
Some of the questions I ask to help me understand clients’ safety needs (if I were asking it for yoga):
1. Have you been thinking about joining this class/studio for long?
2. What was it that helped you choose me/us/this studio/this class?
Rock on! Best wishes as you continue providing the safety!
Loved your message! What I really got LOUD and CLEAR is that for each of us ‘safety’ has a different application.
Takes me back to learning to dive…My usual approach to water was the walk s-l-o-w-l-y into the water up to my waist..torture really…But diving into the water and getting cold all at once…ugh!
Just like your giving it another go, I decided one time wasn’t going to kill me…I dove in! Yeh! the cold wasn’t so long lasting and besides it was fun!!!
Now I’m looking at where in my business marketing I may be putting my toe in instead of jumping in whole hog!
Thanks for the great post 🙂
Love that illustration, Mary! And yes, it totally applies to our own relationship with our own business, doesn’t it? How safe do we feel and how is that impacting how we move it forward? Brilliant!!!!

I like it! 🙂
Can you believe it’s taken this long to watch the video but I feel safe to comment even late! So much of what I am observing in HoB reinforces some of my ideas about what helps people feel safe: giving them an idea of what to expect, giving them ideas about dealing with the unexpected! I think the idea of levels too is important: having opportunities for people of different skill levels and experience. Thanks Steve, a timely and helpful video.
