Some thoughts about how hard it is to talk about the magic of your work

My friend and colleague Chris Zydel, who teaches Wild Heart Intuitive Painting, had posted this on socials:
“Some of the most important work that I do can never be talked about because I simply can’t find the words.”

And it’s not that Chris isn’t incredibly thoughtful, articulate and coherent about her work, because she is, and has been for decades.

But, this sparked some thoughts in me about the magic of our work. I say “our” because your work is probably also complex, nuanced, mysterious, magical, spiritual, profound, and ineffable.

Ineffable. It can’t really be talked about. So how the heck are you going to offer it?

So many people fall into the mistake of trying to describe how they do what they do. To try to tell the recipe for the special sauce.

Don’t do it. Don’t even try it. It’s not necessary. And… there’s a deep problem with it.

The problem is this: that magic isn’t meant to be packaged and sold. It’s a beautiful mysterious thing.

And if you think me, the heart centered business guy who has been doing this gig for nearly 24 years, is saying that you can’t package and sell your services, then you haven’t been paying attention…

What I am saying is that there is no possibility, and no need, to talk about the ineffable.

Instead, we focus on empathy. Connection. Safety. Helping people feel truly seen. And letting them know we understand what they are wrestling with.

The ineffable magic… when they feel seen, and they feel safe, and they feel like what you have is relevant… they’ll approach.

And then they’ll feel it. The Magic. And that is how it works…

Stop attempting to talk about the ineffable. It’s ineffable for a reason. Shhhhhhhh…..

Mark

Marketing Your Magic to Strangers

In case you missed it, yesterday we let folks know that our next course, Marketing to Strangers, is open for registration.

Now, this is the realm where so much ugly can collide. The impossibility of talking about your magic. The need to be seen by new people for your business to thrive. The incredibly vulnerability of putting yourself out there. And the disgusting grossness that is so much marketing.

Whew… not fun.

Idea: Let’s make it fun. Seriously.

The course starts September 3. Pay from the heart pricing. Powerful. Simple, approachable. Heart-centered. Effective.

Take a look: Marketing to Strangers
