Welcome to the latest Nitty Gritty Heart interview dealing with the intersection of heart and spirituality and the world of business..
The intention is to help people integrate their sense of spirit and the business world, and to do it in a way that honors the details and numbers that businesses need to function, and honoring the non-linearity and non-logical wisdom that sometimes comes through the Divine. Here are the other Nitty Gritty Heart interviews.
Interview Number Seven: Lisa Sonora Beam
This post is long overdue. I interviewed Lisa a couple of months back, and then it got misplaced in my mind. Thankfully I’ve found it again, because Lisa is a remarkable and fascinating blend of artist and entrepreneur.
She’s a visual artist, and she’s taking on painting 1008 paintings in 2010. Amazing.
She’s also the author of The Creative Entrepreneur: A DIY Visual Guidebook for Making Business Ideas Real. Which is simply and absolutely the most beautiful business book I’ve ever read AND it’s extremely practical and dead-on helpful. You can see the cover right there in the photo. Go get it.
She also holds an MBA in sustainable enterprise, and a Bachelor of Art in music therapy, as well as having been faculty for a green MBA program at Dominican University. She started the highly successful Digital Hive Ecological Design, the first marketing communications firm to specialize in green and ecological initiatives.
Our interview ranged widely over lots of great topics, from her time in Alaska, to her business experience, to where we’re going. Settle in and listen up.

I loved hearing about Lisa’s journey, and really appreciated the connection between creativity (art) and heartful biz (can’t wait to get my copy of her book). Like Lisa, I feel a deep connection to nature and was moved to hear her speak soberly about it especially in relationship to biz. And I especially appreciated the link you made to commitment, cause that’s been a big one for me.
It took some feedback from a mastermind buddy a couple of years ago to help me see this one, but turns out that when I feel stuck, stalled or tentative it’s almost always a commitment thing.
For the last year or so, I’ve been experimenting with three questions that, 8 times out of 10, help.
Why isn’t my heart in this (taking for granted there’s a good reason)?
What would I be willing to commit to?
Does anything need to change so I can?
Love to hear what’s working for others…
“Why isn’t my heart in this?” Such a little question, and so important! Trusting the heart, instead of trying to push against it…
You’re going to love Lisa’s book, I bet.
I downloaded this interview and listened to it while I walked our newly adopted Old English Bull Dog. So much of what Lisa says and so much of her experience resonated with mine, except that as of yet, I still don’t have a business or even yet a clear vision of what that business will be. But listening to this interview and every time I read your blog posts I feel like I am getting closer. And then I will be ready to sign up for one of your workshops.
Mark, I love your work and am so grateful that you are out there on the West coast doing it but that I can read and hear about it through the wonders of the internet!
And my products? Not there yet, though I am on chapter 14 of my novel, I have started a new series of paintings in a book and continue to study and perform viola. And I am developing a “Women’s vision group” for local women but that I would also like to put on-line. Some day I will figure out how to put this all together into a package.
love,
Erika
Thanks for the reference to her blog and twitter. I am looking forward to read and hear what she has to say. A true inspiration, I understand why you did an interview with her!
