To Plan or Not to Plan

Last month, we put a significant amount of energy into creating a detailed strategic plan, one that accounts for now a team of folks making Heart of Business happen. It’s been a strenuous journey for me as someone who appreciates guidelines, pathways, and sign posts to introduce such things to one-person free-wheelin’ entrepreneurs. Everyone is so used to working alone. Yet we find ourselves here together trying to do something as a team.

The tension between creative freedom and containing, defining boundaries can reach fever pitch sometimes, internally and externally. Neither extreme is very helpful and people can really hunker down on the cliffs at either end. Gratefully, though, the strategic plan is set in ink, now all ready to be tweaked.

I barely catch my breath after that adventure to find myself a week before my partner, Nancy, and I are set to take a long awaited vacation. Again I’m faced with the plan, no-plan clash. Nancy is yet another one-person free-wheeler. She doesn’t do planning . . . I won’t go into my woes, but only to say that it’s peak season for camping, cabins, and such, and we have no reservations. Nope.

To plan or not to plan, that is what’s on my mind lately. My shoulders are tired holding the planning pole. I need a vacation. Where do you pitch your tent on the plan or not plan spectrum? What do you see as the pros and cons of each? Balance? If you feel compelled get the conversation rollin’ in the Tent.

See you in the Tent,

Kate
