Many Miles From Home With Family

So I’m on my way to witness my niece, Rachel’s, high school graduation. This will be the third high school graduation I’ve sat through in as many years. It will also be the third one I’ll have sat shoulder to shoulder on football field bleachers with hundreds of other unrelated relatives.

I suspect there will be many cell phones tuned into the internet watching stats on the NBA final, final game. Everyone sweating, squirming, waiting for their chance to stand up as a family and shout into the 100 yard expanse. Their dear daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, niece, sister, brother, cousin, friend, a mere ant in a gown traipsing across a distant stage.

It starts at 5:00 p.m. I’ll probably go with my sister, Sara, at 3:00 p.m. to save five seats each. I don’t even want to count the number of hours I’m going to be one with the bleachers tonight. I’m the big sister of three who no longer have our mother here in body to hold us together. I wouldn’t be anywhere else on this Thursday evening so many miles from home.

See you in the Tent,

Kate
