Three Ducks, an Opossum, a Stand of Doug Fir, and a Three-Story Acupuncture Needle
I’m not kidding. All on one evening’s walk to Mt. Tabor from my house in urban Portland.
Tobi, my dog companion, and I headed out through neighborhood streets to a wooded, trailed park holding three huge and open reservoirs of drinking water. Beautiful place.
First we saw three mallard ducks in someone’s front yard. Two didn’t even fly away when we passed within 10 feet. How could I not smile in wonder, laugh at the oddity?
Just before entering the park at the end of a dead end street sat an opossum in someone’s parking strip. Granted, they don’t see well, but we easily sidled up near it sitting in the middle of the street, again about 10 feet away and had a wordless long moment before she moved on, slowly. How could I not feel a touch of awe, honor, and curiosity?
Once in the park, I began feeling even deeper into the borderlands between worlds, slipping through, trailing a slipstream of gratitude. I prayed in the face of a grove of 60+ foot Douglas Fir trees whose branches took up with a sudden breezy gush of air.
Just as I thought my feet might leave the ground, a three-story acupuncture needle came into my view. Whoa! Silver shaft, golden pillowy top piece like the sections of a tootsie roll. How could I not think someone had slipped me a mickey? It wasn’t there the day before yesterday!
I walked up to a small sign next to it. It described the point–lung–and how it was an art installation slash social intention marker put there by the city to bring attention to a point of concern and ongoing project. Wow. I suddenly felt the land of my dear home as if it were a pulsing, breathing body. I saw and imagined this needle being placed just so with the intention to heal in the same way I’ve experienced little acupuncture needles penetrating my own body. How could I not feel held in the spirit and love of this life, the deep truth of interconnectedness, and the mysterious ways we are reminded when paying attention?
Take this as an ode to the mystery, to the endless opportunities to bask in gratitude for this world we trip, fall, and stand back up in–over and over again. I did.
See you in the Tent,
Kate
