We Are a Hidden Chest of Treasures for Each Other
There’s a continual message in popular culture that there’s not enough of the good stuff to go around: money, energy, real estate. And that there’s less with every day that passes.
And yet, there is an incredible abundance of things that are perhaps even more important: our strengths, talent, and the deep longing to use our gifts to make a difference in the world.
I am constantly struck by the talent and diversity in the Oasis membership. The Oasis is a hidden chest of treasures. Each of you embodying jewels (talents, strengths, and knowledge) that when shared enrich us all.
A few years ago, I participated in a fun exercise with a local non-profit. Here’s what we did:
1. Anyone in the group working on a project (“project” was very loosely defined as a venture with a beginning, end, and measurable goals) could make a “pitch” to the group as a whole.
2. The “pitch” was simply to tell folks what the project was and, most, importantly, what resources were needed to make the project successful.
Examples of resources included: volunteers, job candidates to fill a particular position, technical equipment like computers and printers, a venue to hold an event, recommendations for specific professionals such as attorneys and other experts, and referrals to prospective clients and customers.
3. Once each person finished their pitch, everyone in the audience who could provide a resource or refer a resource gave their business card to the person who made the pitch.
4. The person making the pitch would commit to contact every person received a card from within two weeks.
It was a seriously cool experience. I was blown away by the number of cards people received who requested resources.
The creativity people showed in how they asked for and offered resources also impressed me. For example, one person asked for opportunities to do guest blog posts. Another wanted introductions to business leaders in the community.
So here’s a fun challenge I encourage each of you to take on:
Create a post on the Oasis that shares one project you’re working on and the resources you need. In the post ask people to let you know if they can help or refer you to someone who can help.
Let’s see what treasures get uncovered in this process.
See you in the Tent,
Judy
