To GooglePlus or Not

He works with clients and runs small groups for us, rolling up his sleeves and opening his heart (can you open an already wide-open heart?) to support folks in the steep slopes of their business. I’m grateful for his wisdom, his caring, his strength, his love, and his unwavering focus on helping clients be very profitable without losing their hearts.

  1. Hi Jason,

Which party would you recommend for people who are just starting out and have no network yet?

Twitter seems easy but to start from a following of almost zero and then building up over time seems like so much possibly wasted time, if Google Plus is going to be the place to go…?

    Thanks!
    Go well,
    Catharina

    1. Jason I plunged into my question without saying what a geat video this was. I loved that you shared such gems within a short time frame—and like Yollana I thought the party metpahor was spot-on. Please do lots more!

  2. Great post, Jason! Your party metaphor made perfect sense to me! The only place where it might be important to consider jumping on the google plus wagon regardless is if it aligns with your marketing strategy because you offer a product or service specifically for geeks, social media nuts and/or early-uptakers. If reaching those people is not already part of your marketing strategy, then it’s very sane advice to consolidate where you are first, before jumping into what’s next…

  3. Jason, I agree with you in essence but I think Google Plus and the +1 button matter in a different way. Google is incorporating social media, social interactions and social recommendations into their search algorithm. They are also paying attention now to who is authoring content.

They are trying to gather that information directly. So if you’re wanting to get traffic directly from the search engines you probably want to be monitoring Google Plus and be ready to join as soon as your market shows up there.

While you can wait on Google Plus, I do think everyone should add the +1 button and the rel = “author” tags to their sites immediately. Again this is information being sent directly to Google and being incorporated in search results.

Someone asked above which social network is best and it really depends on your market. Figure out where they are and go there first. As a general rule I would say Facebook is probably at the top of the list at the moment but that could change and again it depends on your market.

I have found FB and FB ads extraordinary for list building. Can’t say I’ve converted anyone directly but I certainly have grown 2 lists at a much faster rate.

  4. @Catharina, thank you for the comments. Which one to start with? I agree with @Yollana that if your audience are early adopters, techie, or if the majority of your clients have gmail account Google + is the way to go.

If this isn’t the case, then you may want to start with one of the other three – Which one? Just like resonating in your heart with your pricing, you can resonate in your heart to see which one to start with. Choosing anyone of the three and moving forward can be very helpful to increasing awareness about your biz.

  5. @Susan. I’m guessing execs are still frustrated that Google Buzz failed, so yes I can see how like Gmail, there will be a build up and the value of using Google+ will be clear in the next year.

At the same time as a business owner you have to check in and notice your own capacity. If you’re splitting your attention between too many places, it can leave you exhausted and depleted. My recommendation is still the same to choose one place and show up consistently. Like a lighthouse – the focus and brightness of your jewel will be seen and create a stronger awareness and attention to who you are and how your business serves.

    1. Oh I agree Jason. Take one at a time. Right now the only people on Google Plus are techies but I agree with Adrienne there’s a good chance it will be a serious challenge to FB down the line. It’s worth watching how each market embraces it or not.

  6. Jason, I couldn’t agree more, especially for those who are just starting out building an online presence. All of the social media platforms take time and energy to build and you just can’t do it all at once. I do think that Google+ is going to give FB a run for its money (at least among the tech savvy crowds), but Twitter is something different altogether.

Everyone should go build an about.me right away, though! It’s not a social site, just a virtual business card, but you can link to everything you’re doing online.

  7. @ Adrienne, you have a good point. It can be helpful to have a profile on all the above with contact info since all places lead back to your site and how to contact you.

  8. First off, it was a great video. Thank you for sharing.

I agree with comments here. If you are just starting your business, I think FB has the edge above all social media sites. Just like what Susan said, “FB ads extraordinary for list building”

But I also think that it is important to have accounts on 4 social media sites. Just take one step at a time. For google plus, I guess users are still exploring it now.

  9. You heard here readers.

As @Internet Marketing Company Toronto is sharing start by creating a profile on any social media site that allows you to link to your website. Then choose one and set a structure like 30 minutes 3 X per week. Remember to post on others info as much as you sharing your own content.

  10. I like your video. I like the way you explained everything, Jason. Thank you for explaining it in plain English. Build business relationship in one social media website at a time – great idea!

  11. Google Plus is all about content delivery. I think it plays more a role in marketing and business now more than ever. Social media is huge in the marketing space, and of course it’s all about content, combining these two ideas is making a huge statement and I think we’ll see it make a huge impact.

I’m interested to see how Google implements business pages into the platform in the future.

    1. @Web Marketing Soup – I’d be curious to hear why you think Google + is all about content delivery and specifically what content delivery means to you.

      1. @Jason They have just perfected the way you share any kind of content. It’s so much easier than Facebook to post any kind of online content.

On top of that, it allows for INSTANT feedback from any of your followers which is much more effective than a traditional blog. Think RSS Feed with super easy commenting.

As far as what it means to me, for now I find it easy to share useful articles with followers and it’s also great for video marketing, posting video blogs or other helpful videos that can instantly be delivered to followers.

Like I said above, I think the addition of business pages will make a huge effect on how the platform is used.

        1. Sounds pretty enticing. Just one small problem, I tried to sign up right after my vlog and the beta test is full. Like gmail I see huge push to maximize the boundaries of the beta before allowing others in. Is this healthy or just hype?

  12. Thank you for this clear but powerful message about the importance of focus, attention, and prioritizing. Its truth resonates with me and reminds me how out of synch I get sometimes when I allow myself to be spread too thin.

    1. @Elizabeth, you summed it up – focus, attention, and prioritizing. Ahhhh just reading the out loud brings breath into the overwhelm.

  13. I love what Google Plus has to offer, but I’m not seeing many people jumping to join it just yet.

With the entire SEO world being tossed upsidedown over social metrics and social ranking factors, it has amazing potential.

Google Plus offers much more than Facebook.

Great video and thanks for sharing.

      1. It is amazing and perhaps when it finally leaves the Beta stages, if there will be higher buy-in.

I’m seeing much of the content that people have +1 rank a little higher than content that has not. It’s obvious Google has place a little more juice on this.

The addition of games is a sign they want to compete with Facebook, but one has to wonder if it hasn’t left it too late?

What’s definitely certain the landscape around social is evolving wouldn’t you agree?

  14. I agree with the point about focus on one social media at a time. I think that should apply to all parts of your internet marketing strategies. A common mistake people make is to try to go in too many directions at one time and they just end up spinning their wheels and get nowhere fast. Focus on one thing and get good at that one thing before you move on to the next project or next social media platform.

  15. Web Marketing leads the way, and the marketing dollars don’t lie! The internet, as a marketing medium, now ranks ahead of TV, Radio and Print as the preferred marketing method for businesses, brands and organisations in Australia.”
