Heaven on Earth

There’s a Sufi saying that asks us to “Die before you die.” Volumes can (and have) been written explaining this teaching, but to put it simply, it refers to the transition that happens in death, where we leave the physical body and begin the life of the heart. As spiritual beings, we are asked to live the life of the heart, and the soul, now, before our physical death.

This past weekend my Sufi sheikh was in town, on his once a year visit to the States from his home in Jerusalem.

During his time teaching he spoke at length about how our hearts are meant to manifest the Qualities of the Divine here on earth. That we are meant to carry the message of love and peace and mercy and justice and freedom.

Business is one of those arenas where the message has so much NOT been about those five qualities. Painful.

I so appreciate the balance we walk, needing to care for our material needs, to make enough money to pay the bills, to do well. Yet the yearning in our hearts reaches for a much higher aspiration.

A friend of mine, Martin Rutte, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work, and one of the earliest pioneers of spirituality in the workplace, has been working on bringing Divinity alive in the world. He calls it Project Heaven on Earth. (Facebook: Project Heaven on Earth)

Through Martin, Heaven on Earth has been picked up as a theme by a surprising number of political provinces, organizations and individuals during the years he’s been carrying this message.

Although many people claim it’s not an either do well or reach for higher aspirations, my experience with the Sufi teachings is that often it is. Your heart fills with whatever it faces, and it can either face the world or face the Source of Love. Face the world and you end up chasing after money and other things you think you need. Face Source, and love begins to be what moves you.

One of the reasons I’m such a proponent of spiritual practice is that, consistently done, spiritual practice cleans the heart of everything that creates drama and disconnection. A clean heart can take action in the world that expresses peace, love, mercy, justice and freedom.

I can still forget sometimes and become focused, for instance, on the numbers for an upcoming class, how many, how much. Then I remember the Source of love and my focus shifts to what we are giving, the teachings and the support. I remember how much I am cared for, how much we are all cared for. A much nicer space for you to enter.

Heaven on earth can be a reality.

Martin asks three questions in his Project Heaven on Earth, and I’m adapting them to your business in particular.
