5 1/2 Tips to Making Video

This Friday, May 22, is a send-off party for me, Mark. No, I’m not leaving Heart of Business. But I, and my family, are leaving Portland. I’m sad about all the wonderful people we’re leaving behind, and we’re excited about our new adventure to Ithaca, New York!

If you are in Portland, or near enough to be able to make it, please come!

Now on to the video about video…

5 1/2 Tips about Video

When I started making video, I was nervous and resistant. But then my friend Charlie Gilkey told me I *had* to, so I took up a challenge to get it done.

Then, I watched as Jason Stein took on making video with a passion. He really dove in, educating himself, learning a lot about how to make an engaging, short video that wasn’t slick and yet wasn’t sloppy.

This video is his latest. It’s quick, just 5 tips (and a half tip), on some real basics about making your video look good that many people miss.

it’s funny, I’ve seen clients who struggle to get their message out find themselves to be surprisingly effective just being themselves in front of a video camera. Certainly not everyone has to do video, but it can be so helpful for people to get a real sense of who you are before they approach. It’s an easier, faster way to create true heart connection.

So, whether you end up doing video regularly or not, I encourage you to at least try it. And to try making video more than once. It may take you 3 or 5 or 7 times before you start to feel comfortable.

What did you learn from his video? Do you make video? Are you willing to shoot a video and share the link below?

p.s. But actually getting it done…

Maybe you’re ready to make video, maybe you’re not. Either way, there’s something your business needs next, whether it’s video or something else. In fact, probably a whole lotta somethings.

With June fast approaching, the summer months might be an ideal time to get a lot of the foundational, critical pieces in place. Wouldn’t it be nice if your business was a LOT more functional, and profitable, so NEXT summer could maybe include a real vacation?

Jump into one of our Foundations programs. They both start the first Monday in June.

Foundations1: Clients and Money covers crafting and pricing offers, and then selling them (among many other things.) It’s for people in start-up, or with very low income, who just need to get clients and money in the door.

Foundations2: Expand Your Reach is for those whose income is at times okay, but inconsistent, and you knew if you reached more people, you would have a full, consistent business. It covers website strategy and networking (including networking for introverts!).

Don’t know what you need? Take our Readiness Assessment. We can help you learn where your business is developmentally and what you need to help it grow.

Don’t want to be in a course?

Maybe you’re ready for someone to just roll up their sleeves and get down into your business with you, and help it fly, as efficiently and as heart-centered a way as possible.

  1. Hey Jason, that was fun. You have no problem being yourself! On a more serious note, I’d love some tips about lighting, and the best device to use for video.

  2. Thanks for the tips Jason – loved your video and it had me smiling with multiple chuckles!!
The most important message after the very basics is to be *yourself*, which you do really well!
Not sure about the ‘being unique’ thing – part of me would get worried about that (another thing to beat myself up about…. “am I *unique* enough ??!!”) –
I’m embracing the ‘just be yourself’ and have really enjoyed making video for my blog posts which is natural and conversational … haven’t yet brought my sense of humour in, but there’s plenty of time for that…! Thanks for the laughs and reminders! 🙂

    1. Ann – I’m guessing the uniqueness comes natural for you, so no worries there. Let us know when you bring a bit of humor to your blog. I”m guessing your audience will be smiling with you.

  3. Hey Jason,

I’ve got to tell you — I HATE videos. Just as a matter of course. For years. And, I “do” social media for a living. I know, I know. I’m ancient.

Anyways, I’ve watched your two last consecutive videos from Mark’s email. That’s huge. Well done. I laugh, I cry. The whole human experience.

I won’t be making any videos any time soon. But, I am percolating on your notion from the outset about getting comfortable with being seen.

    Thank you for your work,

    Suzanne

    1. Suzanne, it is such a deep compliment that you HATE videos and you watched my last two. I promise to step up my game to keep you viewing the third coming in June. Thank you for taking the time to comment on my work. It really is deeply appreciated.

  4. Ok, you made me LAUGH!! Who’s the girl in the background… she’s got some moves! Oh, and great tips about videos as well.

  5. I really enjoyed that Jason. You make it look fun, now I want to try. How did you stabilize the camera as you spoke? Did you have someone else shoot it? How can u minimize outdoor noise like the wind? Help?
    XO Casey

  6. Jason, I’m truly inspired. I’ve made a couple of videos, but haven’t really stood behind them. Does what I just say make sense? What I mean is, I made them, then quietly shoved them onto YouTube and my website, and mentioned them once … on some media, then returned to my blog posts. You’ve inspired me to consider how I might commit to presenting on video. Maybe I do a video once/mo. Maybe I sometimes record a harp improvisation, or a bit of storytelling, or sneak a peak at a magical spot in nature, and help the viewer tune into that …. The world opens, as I consider this! Gracias! I sure enjoyed your authentic, fun video, and clear message!

    1. Jane – what you are saying does make sense. Videos allow you to tell a story and just by changing a simple thing like lighting or background story you can change the story itself. It’s the story that will engage your audience and it sounds like you have passion bubbling up as well. I say go for it and explore.

  7. Jason, thank you for the wonderfully entertaining video! It not only made me laugh and giggle but reminded me to get out there and do some video recording.

  8. Why did I put off watching this video when I could really use the laugh?? Thank you so much for sharing this, and most importantly showing that being unique and playful is really powerful. Hmmmm, what video can I make for my work?
