I was facilitating a coaching call for our Foundations1: Clients and Money program, and one of our participants, Monica, was asking about using discounts to get new clients.
I talked about the challenges in using discounts, and instead suggested using a bonus. And then, some days later, something from Monica arrived in the mail…
Check out what Monica sent me! And you also learn how early I get up…
When I showed Monica this video and asked her permission to use it, she said “Let them know I put this bonus together for only $7! And the discount I was thinking of giving was going to be much more than that.”
If you’re in the Philadelphia area, go see Monica for acupuncture. Her presence and commitment have impressed me, and I bet she’s great!
Okay, beloved of the heart, time to get creative. What kind of a bonus can you dream up that is a) fun and inspiring, b) related to what you do, c) what people would really enjoy getting, and d) relatively inexpensive and easy to provide?
Share what you come up with in the comments below, so we can inspire each other with ideas!

Here’s what Ingrid told us:
I am extremely happy with the program…I feel that I am at the right place, this is the program I was looking for the last few years.
I have spent quite a lot of money for different business trainings and I was often judged about my heart approach. Pushing and manipulating techniques were requested and … did not work with me, I just could not apply them. It felt not right and out of integrity to me.
Here, in the community of Heart of Business I feel at home…finally I am allowed to use, listen and do business from my heart 🙂 THANK YOU, THANK YOU so much!

This was such a great reminder to not make assumptions about why our clients do or don’t buy from us.
And I have to say that the Valentine’s Day card I got from Heart of Business this week was an unexpected bonus that was a GREAT way to stay top of mind with clients. Really nice job, Mark!
Thanks, Lisa! Big appreciation for you!
I love this bonus package and am inspired to think up one for myself. AND I opened up the beautiful Valentines card today, which filled my heart to overflowing. Thank you for all the giving and the inspiration Mark.
Juliet- Yay! Can’t wait to see what you come up with. And you are so welcome, Juliet.
I love this! I was taught to set my fee and then jack it up the amount of the “discount” I want to give, so that I’m really getting my full fee and the client feels as though she (in my case) is getting a bargain. I’ve struggled and struggled with that. This feels much better. It’s a fun thing, for both giver and receiver, and I can see how it brings out your creativity. I don’t have a plan yet, but I do have a smile on my face. Thank you, Mark and Monica!
I’m thinking of Adam Grant’s work on the power of giving. Very nice.
Michelle- so wonderful to hear! And yes, the manipulative, sneaky thing of increasing the price then “discounting” doesn’t feel good, does it. I’m unaware of Adam Grant- do you have a link?
OK no fair morning vlogging at 4 am when you’re a short-haired guy and can roll out of bed looking presentable! LOL but this vlog teaches me that it’s OK to be “unprofessional.” There is room to just show up as I am, without any fancy packaging!
That is seriously and joyously inspiring. Thanks!
Mark, I kept this email in my inbox til I had time to watch it. It was as good as I had anticipated… great reminders that a) our own videos can (and should ) be informal and fun (and vulnerable), and b) bonuses can be sweet and nurturing and something we might share with a friend. Thanks for sharing your early morning time!
Holly- so sweet to hear from you! Thank you- and so glad you enjoyed it. It was a pretty much unplanned, in-the-moment inspiration at 4am. 🙂
