The Dangers of Misunderstanding “Heart-centered”

mark-silver-2Many people misunderstand “heart-centered” business.

They think it means “go with the flow.” Or “do whatever feels good right now.”

Although there are moments in time when heart-centered can mean that, more often heart-centered means:

  • a willingness to be uncomfortable in pursuit of the truth, and love;
  • a desire to presence a world you believe in;
  • the commitment to show up and do the hard work of building the reality of your business vision.

There is absolutely a place for self-nourishment, for care. There is space for grief, for fear, for anger. We need our whole selves to be present.

And, sometimes what is called for is a single-minded commitment.

I won’t lie to you, building a business involves hard work. There are times when pushing through is appropriate. I take my cues from nature and the rhythm of the seasons. Springtime is a time not only for planting, but for preparing the ground, and there’s a LOT of work there that needs to be done within a certain time-frame.

Similarly, harvest time you need to rush to bring in the food, before the frost hits. I’m not a farmer, but I can see what happens when things go awry.

Your business has similar rhythms. Not always exactly by season, but within the seasons of development of your business. Sometimes you do benefit from getting things done in a short time frame, even if it is a push.

And sometimes, you face a challenge in your business that you haven’t solved yet. Sometimes, what is being asked for is a commitment to meet that challenge, to drop any distracting thoughts and just figure out what is needed.

Faced by self-judgment? “I’m not good enough. I can’t figure it out.” Don’t be impressed. Instead, find your commitment to face the challenge and figure it out.

Sometimes figuring it out is Do-It-Yourself (DIY). Sometimes it means hiring someone to help you. Sometimes it means taking on a learning project. (on page 36 of that PDF.)

Sometimes it’s just a commitment to work a little harder.

Do you want to work like that all the time? No, it’s not sustainable. But sometimes, for short period, you just need to get it done.

I’ve found that sometimes the energy lifts me and carries me onto a path. Other times, I find that I need to step onto the path with commitment, and the power needed rises up to meet me as I step forward.

Some examples:

  • One of our clients who was working with Heart-Centered Websites within Foundations2: Expand Your Reach and just needed to get that darn website done, so buckled down for about 5 weeks, pushed through and got it done. Now it’s off her plate and she can focus on bringing in new clients.
  • Another client who was in last year’s Heart of Money Transformational Journey, who had been paralyzed for too long about dealing with back taxes. She found the Divine commitment in her heart, cleared out a full day, and gathered her receipts. She took a deep breath, called an accountant, and showed up at the appointment and got help.
  • A third client who had taken on Heart-Centered Networking, and despite being somewhat introverted, realized that facing the truth about her business meant that she *had* to meet new people. She found a way that worked for her. It was a bit uncomfortable, but not in a bad way, and she started making new connections. This led to speaking opportunities and a much wider network.

Take this into your heart.

What commitment is your business asking from you? What is it that’s needed over the next few months? What can you embrace, despite it being uncomfortable?

With hugs and big gratitude,

  1. Hi Mark,
    I’m excited about this upcoming process. I’ve tried so many different ways of shifting my thinking about money and making enough to live on. I teach theatre arts to children and find it very rewarding except that I’m constantly juggling the heart thing against the $ thing. If I could do it for free I would…..except that I like eating and having a roof over my head. I know this is pretty odd thinking in this society. I live very minimally and there are things I would like to do but somewhere in there is the question of “do I deserve it” going on. Anyway, I hope your course will shed a different light on some of these issues so I can see things from a different perspective. (The pressure’s on. Haha.)

  2. Great reminder. I believe these all sit in the back-of-mind of every pro – but we tend to not acknowledge them in some decisions, which may pave way for problems further down the road. Good read.

  3. Thank you Mark – this was very helpful to me today. I’m in a quiet planning season for the coming year for my business, where I’m being asked to step into greater commitment.

    And yes, there are so many mixed feelings there!

    This phrase in your article stood out for me – “find your commitment to face the challenge and figure it out.”

    Yes, my commitment – the yearnings of my heart – feeds my courage, and helps me rise up rather than collapse in overwhelm. Thank you for that reminder!

  4. I think if you love something and want to make a living out of it then its the best thing that can happen! Your hobby becomes your profession.
