Talking about your business when the world is intense

It’s no secret that the U.S. political situation is a mess right now.

There’s a lot of extreme stuff going on. Not only might you be affected emotionally, there’s also the issue of what’s appropriate to talk about? As one of our Community members put it, “I had a launch on 1/13 of a new novel, and I didn’t even like posting about it. Just felt so unimportant and not in line with other things I’m currently posting about.” – Christina Garner, www.christinagarner.com

I get where Christina is coming from. I kinda feel the same way.

But you have to talk about your business. For two reasons. I also want to talk about how to make it work.

The first reason is that you kinda gotta. You can’t, in effect, quit your job. Related: your clients and the people you serve also don’t want you to just stop. Even if it’s “just” a novel, your world view and viewpoint are important and they still want it.

The other reason is that when the political situation is a mess, it’s in comparison to how we want things to be. And the way we want things to be, is with your contribution present in the world. So don’t abandon your good work right now! Keep it up.

So… how do you do it without feeling inappropriate, or strange?

The first thing is that if you are speaking up, then you’ve “earned the right” so-to-speak, to speak about other things. No one with heart is going to fault you putting your work out there.

I don’t mean that everyone needs to speak up politically. I mean that if you are someone who is speaking, whether it’s on social media or on other forums, because you feel compelled to by your heart, then it’s okay to take some air time and dedicate it to other things in your life you care about, including your work.

At one extreme is to never mention your work. At the other extreme is to *only* talk about your work. Life is somewhere in the middle. Speak up about what you want to speak up about, and include your work in that.

Now, what you should avoid is *using* the situation to promote your business. If there were a natural disaster, and everyone was pulling to help the victims, then you wouldn’t be promoting your life coaching business, “Hey, you could get wiped out just like those people did! Would you want to face catastrophe without having lived a life worth living?”

Gross. Manipulative. And, people will most likely have a bitter taste in their mouth about you because of it.

You don’t have to ride that bandwagon, and believe me, you don’t want to. However, the things that made your work important before are still valid. People are still living their lives, those concerns are still active for them.

Now, you may intellectually know all of that, but still be caught up emotionally, and feel unable to move forward easily (or at all). It’s okay. That has happened to a lot of us.

Every Monday within our Community I lead a live 15 minute guided Remembrance on different topics, as a way for us as a community to touch into the Divine in the context of all the different situations we face in business.

This week I led one on When society feels fragile. It’s on this topic. If you’re feeling that way, I want to share it as a gift in case it’s helpful to you.

When society feels fragile Guided Remembrance

Please let me know if this is helpful, and share how you are walking with everything going on in the world right now.

  1. Hi Mark, thanks so much for addressing this, it is definitely something I have been wrestling with. Like Christina’s comment, it’s that feeling of “how can I possibly talk about my [class/free talk/the importance of money management] now, when so much huge stuff is going on?” And do I mention the outside situation, or do I just ignore it. It has indeed been a fine line to walk, and especially in the context of not feeling very grounded myself for much of January. And yet…I still have this business to run, I still have people to see, and I have noticed that when I am working with my clients is when I feel the best. So I think it is important to find a way to carry on. The remembrance yesterday on instability was wonderful, thanks.

  2. Dear Mark,
Thank you for your remembrance meditation. I have been feeling this free floating anxiety and was not able to put a name to it. And those feeling of instability, trigger
other wounds of instability. Today I can grieve again. I can refocus on that which is the truth for me and pay attention to grounding in that stability. And of course this impacts all that I am, all that I do, and how I serve. Mahalo.
