Back to the snow to talk about writing

I suddenly remembered, in that way you do in odd moments, that I had shot a video back in March, right after a snow storm, that we had never sent out for one reason or another.

I watched it again just now, and was all like, “Hey, send that out, now!” So we did. 🙂

It’s all about the damage that careful writing can do. It’s under 4 minutes, and if you’re in the northern hemisphere, you’ll get a delightful reminder of cooler weather, and if you’re in the southern hemisphere, hopefully this will come across as empathy for the season you’re in! 🙂

Here’s a challenge:

• Pick one short piece of writing, maybe it’s on your website, maybe somewhere else, and notice if it feels at all careful, or sterile or professional.

•Take a moment to get the gist of what you’re saying, and then record yourself speaking that same content, as if you’re telling a close friend about it, using totally relaxed and conversational language.

Notice the difference. What do you notice? If you’re willing, share what you got!

  1. So on point! Am just sitting with this today, breaking the hurtful messages of limited schooling and un-heartful teachers – ready to transcend all the stories I’ve been carrying for far too long about ‘how it should be done’! Thanks for the encouragement to continue and trust this unschooling.

    1. Charu! Yes! De-schooling and Un-Schooling! Rock it out, because obviously your heart has the goods. 🙂

  2. Wow, this really takes the pressure off! As a professional writer of 2 decades (although not a bestselling author — yet) I’ve learned to write careful copy for large organizations that haven’t had a real voice or personality. So it’s a process of finding my own voice for my business and trusting it. I’m getting better at it. Creating videos actually helps that as I’m speaking my knowledge and not just writing it.

    1. Joanna- it is really helpful to speak it out, isn’t it? Here’s to seeing your voice bloom!
