Enter the world of dinner to get stuff done

This shelter-in-place thing is wearing, isn’t it? I’ve had times of complete exhaustion, and just strange funks, and other times of wild inspiration and feeling fantastic. Up and down. Down and up.

In the midst of all the uncertainty, a conversation that has come up with a few different clients has been how hard it is to get through a to-do list. When we’re processing so much emotionally, it can be really rough, and hard to bring creativity and inspiration to work.

And that’s okay. It’s normal. Expected.

It’s one of the reasons I really like people understanding their business developmentally. Even in the best of times, the sheer number of different things that a business eventually needs in place is totally overwhelming, especially if you’re trying to do it all at once.

Having a developmental model, like I explain here, helps you know where to focus, and even more importantly, what you can ignore.

That doesn’t fix the motivation problem.

Focusing in on what’s needed, putting aside what’s not needed can help with overwhelm, but it doesn’t solve the motivation problem.

I think there’s a critical shift needed, and it has to do with changing your “to-do” list to a “giving attention” list.

If we’re in a funk, uninspired, and we’re facing a to-do list, then there’s this pressure of doing, of being productive from the moment you touch the list. That is incredibly demotivating.

Entering the world of dinner.

What I know about myself is that it’s hard to be instantly productive. But, if I spend enough time in relationship with something, a new reality starts to form. If I know dinner needs to be made, I don’t immediately grab a knife and start chopping onions.

Instead, it’s easier if I can set everything else aside, and have permission to stand in the kitchen for a few minutes, without being productive. What’s here? What does my body want? What have we eaten recently? What mood are the kids in?

As I “enter the world” of dinner, so-to-speak, motivation, inspiration starts to rise up. I may still not be at my unicorns-and-rainbows most inspired, but I’m engaged with the process, and something comes together.

It’s the same with business tasks. Getting this newsletter done, for instance, was just this process. Being with it. Seeing what I’ve created recently. Breathing. Entering the world of the newsletter. And I start to write.

More than a language shift.

This shift from “to-do” to “giving attention to” may sound like just a shift in language, but it’s really a shift in relationship.

Try it, especially in these strange, funky times. What’s something you know your business needs, that you feel uninspired around? What happens if you let yourself “enter the world” of that project? If you take some time to be with it, to give attention to it, to see what rises up?

I’d love to hear your experience with this, if you’re willing to share.

With love,

Entering the world of your business’ heart

This “giving attention to” is foundational to how our virtual spiritual business retreats work. By giving an entire day of spiritual practice and heart-space to your business, without the urge to be productive, there is so much you can learn. So much you can clear. So much you can hear and notice and shift.

We move too quickly, and so miss critical pieces of guidance, of clarity, and it all ends up, despite our speed, being much slower and messier than it needed to be.

In a little over a week, Friday, April 24, I’m leading just such a retreat, as I have nearly 100 times before over the last 15 years. It’s your chance to change your heart’s relationship to your business, to clear out fears and misconceptions, to receive healing, to receive guidance. To feel at peace.

A Sufi retreat, filling your business with love! Delicious! And at pay-from-the-heart pricing.

  1. I find that sitting down for dinner with my family as a great time to talk and find inspiration for what needs & wants need or should be considered during the week. Like You, I don’t necessarily find that unicorn idea, but it does allow us all to relax and just talk which often offers some fun & unique perspectives on our lives.
I look forward to seeing what the virtual seminar has to offer and perhaps find some enlightenment or inspiration.
