A long time ago my wife and I first encountered the approach known as Family Constellations or System Constellations work, and it has had a profound effect on us over the years.
There’s this realm in healing between personal development, where you are working on yourself, and the Divine, where there is the Oneness, wherein reside the energy of groups and systems, including ancestors.
Constellation work is one way to approach this, which is why I wanted to interview Leslie.
Leslie Nipps is the founder of Convivium Constellations, bringing systemic solutions to what are often seen as personal problems. She works with individuals, especially small business owners who are experiencing puzzling obstacles in their work. She leads trainings in Family Constellations work, and mentors practitioners who want mastery, integrity and success in Constellations Work. She is also the founder of the West Coast Constellations Intensive, June 10th-14th in San Rafael, CA . This event gathers leading Constellations trainers from around the world to take part in a shared ancestral healing deep dive retreat.

Hi Mark: This Intro to Constellation work is amazing. Can you go into more depth or give an example of how it fills in the space between personal work and spiritual work. Especially spiritual work. I’m realizing that I can see how personal work may not be enough.Duh No brainer…But Spiritual work well that is the Holy Grail the Magic Bullett, the Heal-All. Could you explain when spiritual work is not sufficient, how we would know and what each type of work is meant to do and not do. Hope this makes sense! Thanks again for a deeper insight into Constellation work.
Hi Kristen. This is Leslie Nipps, and my experience is that Family Constellations can work in any context where the unconscious of systems might be useful, whether in hard-nosed organizational contexts, or in spiritual ones. In almost any context, we can fall into the trap of seeing things in terms of the personal, and miss what’s influencing us and our situation from a larger frame. To the degree a spirituality has this perspective (and I often notice, for instance, that Mark’s Sufism does indeed have a systemic perspective), then our spirituality can be in service of this. And, I find that spirituality can also have blindspots around the unconscious of historical systems that affect us. In the context, it can be useful to have constellations handy as a tool to inquire into these kinds of influences. I hope that’s helpful!
Mark and Leslie: Brilliant! The minute you mentioned the ongoing legacy of the Trail of Tears, Leslie, I immediately thought of my paternal ancestors who lived in 1797 in one of the “Lands to which the Indian Claim is not extinguished.” My ancestors wrote eloquently that they should not be forced to leave the area, “treaty or no treaty,” because it would make their children and women cry, and they claimed entitlement to the land by “purchase, occupancy, conquest, and relinquishment by the Aborigines.”
Before I listened today to the guided visualization on your site, Leslie, I knew much about the history of my Scottish ancestors, including the Burning Times that made them fear nature, the powers of women, and their own intuition. I knew how pained they were to have had to leave Scotland because there was no opportunity there, or because so many had been killed in the many wars with each other and the British.
Doing the exercise was a huge eye-opener. I now know much more about why I often struggle with finishing a piece of writing that deeply calls me and I know to be true. I now feel a blessing from ancestors honoring my right to enjoy things they could never have AND a blessing for the call to speak out about wrongdoing that was brought to America by my people and increased here, and at the same time to be grateful for their gifts that have come down to me. I felt as if I carry their wish for someone to dare stand up for to my people today and say lovingly, “What we have done and continue to do to Native Americans, the land, African Americans and more is not right. Listen to your heart. We’ve got much to clean up here, so let’s do it. Together.”

Wow, Pat, that is amazing. Thank you for sharing. What a rich and complex lineage! And yes, even when we know a lot about our ancestors, many of us find it useful to acknowledge their experience (suffering, oppression, betrayal, etc.) and to respectfully leave it with them. It has a liberating affect. Constellations can come into play when for whatever reason that simple movement doesn’t feel effective – maybe there are still secrets, or something important is still not included, and that’s keeping us stuck.
