From El Schoepf (they/them)
GTIP class of 2021

“Like many of us, probably, my counseling degree prepared me to support people — but nobody talked about what it actually looks like to build a sustainable practice from the ground up, or how to navigate the tension between doing healing work and surviving in a capitalist economy. When I went looking for support with that gap, a fellow GTIP community member pointed me toward Mark and Heart of Business. I took one class with him and have stuck around ever since.

“Mark’s approach is unlike most business coaching out there — it’s grounded, honest about the structural challenges we’re all navigating (both as practitioners and as clients), and genuinely heart-centered without spiritual bypassing. I’m sharing this webinar with our GTIP community because I wish I’d had access to this kind of thinking earlier in my journey, and I think many of you will find it valuable wherever you are in yours. I hope to see you there!”

So many people put really sincere effort, sometimes over years… and yet the business doesn’t gain traction.
There’s a lot that goes into getting a tiny, or solo, business off the ground. And it’s heart-breaking when a bunch of work goes in and you don’t make any progress.

Often people think something is wrong with them, or have a spiritual issue that is blocking them, or that something is just broken.

Rarely is that true. I want to share a developmental model for heart-centered, spiritually-oriented business development that allows for a great deal of creativity, and brings clarity to the business journey.

When you’ve tried and it’s still a struggle...

I’d love to get through these four things:
Capitalism is not the same as trade and commerce. When we can see the system for what it is, we don’t have to take the challenges personally. And, we can find more nourishing ways through.
Tiny businesses, solo or just a handful of people involved, go through a different developmental process than larger businesses. I want to show you the model, so the terrain makes sense to you, and you can understand better where your business is and what it needs.
There is a spiritual side to business development, and it’s nuanced. Spirituality does make a difference, but it does not work on the vending machine model- “put in a prayer, receive  cookie.” I want to share the Sufi spiritual perspective on spiritual work in business.
It doesn’t have to be a mystery. There are certain things that, once you can see them in your business, you know you’re on the right track.

Let’s demystify the whole process of getting your business up and running.

About Mark and Heart of Business

Mark Silver, M.Div., is a master teacher in his Sufi spiritual lineage, and is one of the pioneers in spirituality and small business, helping folks in developing a business they can depend on to support them since 1999. Mark is the author of Heart Centered Business: Healing from toxic business culture so your small business can thrive.

He and his company have worked with thousands of small business owners and self-employed practitioners over the last two decades, and he has a reputation in the industry of business development for deep integrity, grounded spiritual teaching, and nitty-gritty, detailed business development work.

In this dysfunctional, painful economy and culture that we’re living in, our central belief is that every act of business can be an act of love.

Mark is also a board member with the Horn Farm Center in York, and he and his family live on 15 acres in Fairview Township where they are slowly developing a food forest.
