Grief before a new direction

We cherish dreams in our business, dreams that don’t always come to fruition the way we want them to. Sometimes we pour enormous care, love and energy into a certain direction, and it just doesn’t turn out right.

When that happens, we sometimes have to shift directions. But our confidence can be shaken, or we can feel worn down, and it can be hard to find the heart to continue especially when it feels like starting over (even if it really isn’t).

Grief is often the missing ingredient. Sometimes a relatively short period of grieving for your business can open up tremendous energy.

Take a look. Only a little over 2 minutes.

Does this ring true for you? Do you have something to grieve, small or large, before you can move forward in your business?

With big hugs,

  1. Good morning Mark,
I completely agree. If we do not make time for the grief we will simply be masking what is and moving on with a brave face, but a face that is devout of the passion that is unavailable at the moment.

For me, getting quiet, allowing myself to write about what I’m feeling, taking myself into nature are all great ways for me to be ‘with’ what is here.

I’m reading David Whyte at that moment and he quotes the Tao Te Ching’s opening comments

In the beginning of heaven and earth
    There were no words,
Words came out of the womb of matter
    And whether a man dispassionately
Sees to the core of life
    Or passionately sees the surface
    The core and the surface
    Are essentially the same,
    Words making them seem different
    Only to express appearance.
If name be needed, wonder names them both:
    From wonder into wonder
    Existence opens.
    -Tao Te Ching

    The core and the surface
    Are essentially the same

This last statement is what hit me the most. The core and the surface are the same. Yet when we run from the core, then the surface is a mere mirage of the whole.

Taking time with the presence of what is means the appreciation for the surface and core can return.

    Have a great day.

Thank you for the encouragement to allow the grieving to happen.

    Love Ciel.

  2. What a beautiful remembrance – I’ve had many twists and turns in my business and each time I finally allow myself to grieve the big and small disappointments (there have been so many) I come out on the other side feeling clearer. And the new direction, or renewed direction, is not as scary or daunting once the emotion is acknowledged – it just wanted to be heard. Then my energy, perseverance and dedication returns. Phew. Thanks for the reassurance Mark 🙂

  3. Thank you for this message. Even to stop for a time in my business while allowing time to deal with my husband’s recent cancer diagnosis, is a grief. I long for the darkness to lift and for motivation and energy to return…and your message gives me permission to simply take my time.

  4. Mark you have such a kind and loving way of touching upon the inner most feelings and experiences we have. Your writings always touch my heart and inspire me to look at and explore the truth of my experience. Thanks to you and Big Hugs back!
