Expenses and slow months

One of my clients in small group coaching was starting to do really well, going from hardly any clients, to going past her first tier income goals and having busy client weeks.

We celebrated for awhile, and then I said, “Don’t get ahead of yourself.” That’s me, always the buzz killer. 🙂

Actually, what I wanted was for her not to lose heart in the coming months.

Two things happen as your business starts to fly.

The first thing is crazy expenses still come in, just like they did before. I’m not really talking about business expenses (please don’t go spending countless thousands on business development programs when you’re in the early stages! (Read: Don’t Buy Now!) Just life expenses.

The fridge dies. There’s a leak in your roof. For us, just last week the oil pan gasket in our car went. $312 we didn’t plan for. There’s always something.

The second thing? Your business will still have down times. Until your business is really well-developed and in momentum, the down cycles will still probably dip below your sustainable numbers.

Don’t lose heart.

When those two things happen to coincide, as they do sometimes, please guard against thinking you did something wrong, or that it’s Divine judgement against you.

Yes, the month will be tough. Yes, it can feel really hard to “be here again!” Let yourself have the feelings, lean into support you have.

But don’t believe the lie that you’ll never get out, that you haven’t made any progress, that nothing will change.

So many people have sold the idea that you can build a sustainable, thriving business in weeks or months, and it’s just not true.

Building a business takes time, for many reasons. It’s not just about mechanics, it’s actually mostly about relationships. And relationships take time to nurture, to deepen trust. It takes time to put all the pieces in place and tweak them and iterate them.

Celebrate the successes. Grieve the challenges. Keep walking.

If you are doing something that really helps people, and if you are committed to developing your business, I believe in you. You can do this. So, so many people have.

Believe. Do the work. Nourish your heart. Keep helping. Get hugs. Continue learning. Implement. Iterate. Celebrate. Believe.

Soon: We’re about to re-open the Learning Community

More than a year ago I developed our Learning Community, pricing at pay-from-the-heart, in response to how many people I’d seen struggle over the years to make effective use of 6 month or 12 month business training programs.

Instead, I wanted to create an environment that was compassionately accountable, spiritually nourishing, and had the practical, nitty-gritty teachings that helped you actually develop a business.

I wanted it to be affordable, and accessible on your timeline. I didn’t want anyone to accumulate debt to do it, and I didn’t want the support to disappear just because it was taking you a human-long-time to move through things.

The result was the Learning Community. We only open it for enrollment a couple of times a year, so we can care for the people inside and deepen/preserve the culture of generosity and open-hearted-ness.

We’re *almost* ready to re-open! While you’re waiting, you may want to save the date:
February 21: Virtual Retreat.

Next Friday I’m leading the first of six Virtual Retreats this year, as a time to go deep, nourish your heart, and receive guidance. Even if you can’t attend the whole thing, it can still be amazingly beneficial. And it’s just one part of what’s in the Learning Community.

Keep your eyes peeled! And if you want to hear first, make sure you get on the Wait List by going here:

  2. starting a new business it’s easy but maintains the same till boost, it’s really hard. You write such a nice article. we run our small hair transplant clinic business in India. the start is hard but now it’s going well after hard work.

  3. Aw, this was an extremely nice post. Finding the time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and don’t manage to get anything done.

  4. Great article Mark! From my past and ongoing experiences, budget bootstrapping is the most important factor to survive (and hopefully succeed) in the entrepreneur jungle. Resilience too!
