Case Study: Minister with a wait-list

It’s common for folks to think that certain kinds of businesses are easier than others. “Well, if I didn’t do such and such strange thing, it would be easier to get clients.” Or, “If I just fixed people’s pain, instead this more nuanced, complicated thing, it would be easier.”

That’s not necessarily true at all.

Today’s case study that should bring you, and many others, some real hopefulness about building strange businesses is Catharine Clarenbach and her business The Way of the River.

She’s a Unitarian Universalist minister, formerly lived in a convent, and an initiate the Tradition of Stone Circle Wicca. She describes herself on her bio, “I am a white, fat, cis woman, a sovereign queer femme with well managed mental illness.”

Her case study is a wonderful insight into how what some might consider “strange” or non-traditional businesses grow, when there’s not a super concrete problem-solution, and the offer is something very subtle and nuanced.
