Standing for what’s needed

In the part of the world my family lives in, it’s planting time. Our garden is going in, steadily, while we figure out watering, and sun angles in our first spring in this home. The plants need to go in now, in order to have enough time to grow through the hot of summer, for harvest this coming fall.

The recent leak that the U.S. Supreme Court is set to take away women’s access to reproductive freedom is horrifying, and that’s just one terrible thing. The events in the world are a sorry mess. I wrote that sentence and it has the danger of sounding passive, as if it just accidentally came to be this way. But really, the world has been made into a sorry mess by a relative handful of people who have way more wealth and power than any individual should have.

And, it’s planting time.

I want to say for your business that it is probably also planting time. It’s a little presumptuous of me to tell you where your business is in this moment, and so you might actually find yourself in more of a fallow time. But fallow times are temporary, not permanent.

Over the last twenty two years that I’ve been involved in building a business, and helping thousands of others develop theirs, there have been so many terrible events.

We have to respond to the cries for help, and for some of us, we’re the ones crying for help.

But don’t let the events of the day make you forget that it’s planting time. That your business needs attention, too, because your clients, the people who need the gifts you’ve been given, need you also.

I believe that we are all yearning for a much more loving, interconnected life, one in which we can care for each other, where no one person has so much power that he can disrupt the lives of countless others. Where accountability feels like love and care, where our gifts contribute to each other, lift each other up.

Your business, thriving, is a part of that dream. At least in my heart, and I hope in yours, too.

Your business is local, embedded in the community you live, even if you are serving people from many places through the blessing of the internet. Your business is yours, where you can arrange your schedule and set your life to make it work for you and your dear ones.

Terrible events will continue to happen, and we will continue to stand against it.

But we can’t just be against. We have to also be for. We have to also be planting and nurturing what we want to see in the world.

Not everyone is starting a business. Some are part of organizations doing incredible work. Others have time and energy to volunteer. Some are raising kids to be aware and work for a better world into the future.

And some, like you and me, are also developing businesses that bring healing, and love and resilience into the world. That help circulate gifts and finances within our local communities. Business that have a heart, that contribute to each other’s lives rather than just attempting to take from them.

What I really hope that you take from this, is that it’s planting time. If your business is part of your dream of how we’re presencing a world we want to live in, your business is worthy of attention in the midst of everything.

Speak up. Donate money. Call your representatives. Go to protests and rallies. Find your non-corporate funded folks willing to serve in local government and support them.

Just also get your plants in the ground. Your business is worth the attention also.
