Don’t create content for a large audience

Creating content doesn’t come easily to some folks, and one of the places people tend to get caught is trying to create content for a large audience. And that’s actually not what you want to be doing.

It’s not that your content might not be seen by many people, but thinking of yourself as on stage is the wrong approach. Let me explain.

I’d love to hear from you, yes you, how this lands with you. What do you notice when you shift your relationship to making content in the way I suggest.

In-depth, personal business assessment

Sometimes you don’t need ongoing work. Sometimes you just need a thorough assessment of your business.

I was reminded recently that I do these, and I love them!

The basics: you send me a bunch of stuff about your business (I have a questionnaire). I go over it in-depth on my own. Then, we meet. I ask a bunch more questions. You ask me questions, we talk.

By the time we’re done, I let you know what I think is going on with your business, and what I think your priorities should be.

People have used these to clear their blind spots, to identify strategy for the next year, to untangle something that isn’t working well. Sometimes to identify the larger, systemic issues behind what looks like an isolated persistent issue.

I have room for five over the next weeks before I get into the next thing on my calendar.

If you’re interested, check out the page below. It does describe my one-on-one work, and if you scroll down to where it says “Two alternatives to long term work,” you’ll see the section on Business Assessments.

  1. Thank you. this is exactly what I needed to hear. I’m beginning to create content and I felt like it was lacking something. And I think that was intimacy and heart. I’m going to ask my heart before I write the next piece.

  2. I love this. It reminds me of good advice I received once about public speaking: ‘Speak to the one person in the room who is your true audience.’
It explains why your videos in the woods always feel so direct and pertinent to me. I feel privileged to be receiving your knowledge, that is born out of so much experience over the years. I feel that you are a personal mentor, generously telling me something special.
    Thank you.

  3. I really appreciate this. I saved this to my inbox to listen to before writing my next newsletter. I am so glad I did. My work is focused on building skills in intimacy, and yet when I make content it is often TOO GENERAL, because I know many could benefit. I am excited to see what comes out of me today after watching this. I am so glad you are in the work MArk. Your approach is so resonant and your heart is so palpable in what you do. You put the human heart into business and at such an important time to do so.
    THANK YOU

  4. Thank you so much for this video Mark! I heard this same wisdom from another artist earlier today, so the synchronicity is also powerful. Currently going through much grief and transformation in my personal life and don’t feel like being “seen” right now. I’ve mostly stopped marketing, but this starting/ vantage point feels accessible. I still enjoy conversations with my friends and people I meet during my work, so… I feel my heart and belly softening. It’s possible I can find my way to a new place with this approach.
