When a Dog Bites, Do You Listen?
I’ve been bit by two different dogs in two entirely different settings in a little over a week. (I’ve lived intimately with dogs all my life, literally, and been bit that many times in 49 years.) One was working with a young pit bull at the Oregon Humane Society, the other was last night on a run with my dog, Tobi.
A loose dog was on the verge of being hit by a car in its exuberant desire to run wild and play. I coaxed him back to his yard with an electric gate that wouldn’t close, no one home, and two old dogs guarding the front door.
While I was backing up, not looking behind me, one of the old dogs bit the heck out of my right calf. The pit bull got my left calf last week. Just hoping to get off the busy street before having to witness the young dog getting hit, I ran for the next turn off in tears of fear and frustration.
Do you ever wonder if there is underlying meaning to weird events that happen to you in a day? I’m one of those meaning-through-metaphor sort of literary-for-life people, if you know what I mean. I wonder what my dreams mean, too.
I do, I guess I can end up reflecting on my waking life in similar ways that I wonder about my dream life. Is it useful? Does it bring us closer to self-understanding? Is there truth to personal mythology?
Mark would say, maybe it just happened. Maybe there’s no underlying meaning. It’s a worthy perspective. Certainly is less complicated, ha! Less mind jumbling. Yet, highly unlikely that I can resist wondering why.
How has your week gone? Any weird occurrences, unusual turns of events? Do you take them in stride? Wonder why? Look for significance or underlying meaning? How do you fit them into your spiritual container? Come have a conversation in the Tent with me.
See you in the Tent,
Kate
