Leadership and Change

I have some big news to tell you all, and I’ve even managed to learn a lesson from it…

My wife and I are moving to Portland, Oregon on March 1, 2002. As in, just three weeks away. Wow, what a big and sudden change, Mark, what’s up? Well, here’s the lesson-

To tell the truth, we have been ready to move on for a few years. The east coast, where our families are? No, not quite right… Out into the hinterlands of Northern California?… Naahh, too dry, besides, who do we know there?… Albuquerque? Hawai’i? Nope, and nope… Nothing seemed obvious, and the only clear reason to leave was that we were “done” in some sense, ready to go. Yet there was nothing to move towards.

Here is the lesson- when change is coming in your life, and you are uncomfortably, impatiently waiting, and it’s not clear what to do- continue to wait!

If you don’t have clear guidance, don’t follow it. Something is cooking.

When you make change, always make sure your heart is pulling you forward towards something, and not pushing you away from where you are. If you leave where you are, you’ll just find it in a different form when you get where you’re going. But if you move towards something new, something beckoning you, that’s the time to jump, when your heart says “Yes!”

Otherwise, just be patient, and know the uncomfortableness, the lack of clarity, is just you cooking in the soup. It takes patience for a mighty fine soup- let your broth thicken.

Now, how do you go about learning these sorts of leadership skills? For that’s what it is- leading from your heart, with your heart, making decisions that you know are right, outside the gerbil wheel we all jump on. Well, I’ve got just the thing-

LionHeart Consulting, with whom I’ve been starting to partner, has been doing management consulting work for close to 20 years, and they have worked mainly in the corporate arena, with small businesses and Fortune 100 companies, with a phenomenal track record.

I am hosting a one-day workshop of theirs in Berkeley on Thursday, February 21st “Leading from inner wisdom.” It runs from 9-4 pm, and costs $200- a bargain. There will also be a free lecture the evening before, Wednesday, 7-9 pm. This is not only going to be a fabulous, experiential, practical workshop, but it will also give you a taste of their upcoming 5-day leadership intensive in Portland, OR, in May. If anyone wants to attend, or wants a brochure, please contact me and I can hook you up. (This same workshop will be appearing in other cities- Los Angeles 2/12, Boston 3/6, Chicago 3/8, San Jose 3/9, Portland 3/14, Detroit 3/15, Baltimore 3/20, and Seattle 3/22. If you are in any of those areas and are interested, contact me and I’ll put you in touch with the local host.)

I will be sending out to you all my new contact information as soon as I know what the new phone numbers will be- probably in the next week or so. For those who are interested, there are actually four or five strong reasons for us to move to Portland, but I won’t bore you with all the details- suffice it to say we know a couple of dozen people in the area, and we found a practitioner who is the first one we’ve seen who can consistently and successfully treat my wife’s Lymes disease. Very exciting- it’s a nasty illness, if you don’t know.

For those of you local to the Bay Area who were waiting for the right time to work with me, no worries! I work with clients all over the country, and distance is no barrier. If you have any questions about this, I’m happy to speak with you.

Spread the love
